At Home on the Earth : A New Selection of the Later Writings of Richard Jeffries

Description

Richard Jefferies (1848-87) has long been recognised as an interpreter of English country life and a natural observer with few if any equals. He was an idealist, who believed that human beings could free themselves from outworn ideas and achieve a greatly enlarged spiritual and physical capacity. A 'poet-naturalist' with an ecological vision, who understood the place of human beings in relation to the 'household' of life on earth, he was both mystic and realist, and his writings show the beauty of 'wild England' but also the harsh conditions of labouring life in the victorian countryside. In his art of seeing, Jefferies was a precursor of modernist techniques, and an influence on modern nature writings and poetry. The variety of his gifts as a writer and thinker is reflected in the diversity of his admirers, who include Edward Thomas and W. H. Hudson, Q. D. Leavis and Henry Miller. Jeremy Hooker's new selection represents Jefferies at his best, and reveals his contemporary significance.

Quick to navigate and easy-to-use, the maps clearly show AA recommended restaurants, pubs, hotels, one-way streets and car parks. Featuring a clever use of colour to ensure it can be read under street lighting, and National Grid referencing, "Street by Street Hatfield, Hertford, Welwyn Garden City Midi" is all you need to keep you on the move.

Further developing the revolutionary work of Zecharia Sitchin, Chris Hardy shows that the `gods` of ancient myth, visitors from the planet Nibiru, created us using their own `divine` DNA--first through DNA extraction from their own ribs' marrow and later by direct relations with Civil Engineering Materials free epub early human females. Drawing upon multiple sacred texts, Hardy details the genetic engineering of humanity by Anunnaki scientist Ninmah, with the help of Enki and Hermes. She reveals how Ninmah's first female human creation, Tiamat/Eve, contained more alien DNA than the earlier male one, Adamu, and how the biblical Noah represents the perfection of her work. Examining the war between Anunnaki brothers Enki and Enlil, Hardy reveals how the concepts of sin and the inferiority of women were born out of Enlil's attempts to enslave and then wipe out humanity, repeatedly thwarted by Enki and Ninmah. The author further explains how the sacred sexuality taught to humans--still seen in Tantric practice--became suppressed millennia later by the patriarchal concept of original sin and how innocent Eve took the blame for the expulsion from Eden and fall from Grace.

David Wellington: 13 Bullets

13 Bullets

Description

All the official reports say they are dead - extinct since the late '80s, when a fed named Jameson Arkeley nailed the last vampire in a fight that nearly killed him. But the evidence proves otherwise. When a state trooper named Caxton calls the FBI looking for help in the middle of the night, it is Arkeley who gets the assignment - who else? He's been expecting such a call. Sure, it's been years since any signs of an attack, but Arkeley knows what most people don't: there is one left. In an abandoned asylum she is rotting, plotting and biding her time in a way that only the undead can. But the worst thing is the feeling that the vampires want more than just Caxton's blood. They want her for a reason, one she can't guess; a reason her sphinxlike partner knows but won't say; a reason she has to find out or die trying. Now there are only 13 bullets between Caxton and Arkeley and the vampires. There are only 13 bullets between us, the living, and them, the damned.

Pushing the Limits: New Adventures in Engineering

Description

Here are two dozen tales in the grand adventure of engineering from the Henry Petroski, who has been called America s poet laureate of technology. Pushing the Limitscelebrates some of the largest things we have created bridges, dams, buildings--and provides a startling new vision of engineering s past, its present, and its future. Along the way it highlights our greatest successes, like London s Tower Bridge; our most ambitious projects, like China s Three Gorges Dam; our most embarrassing moments, like the wobbly Millennium Bridge in London; and our greatest failures, like the collapse of the twin towers on September 11. Throughout, Petroski provides fascinating and provocative insights into the world of technology with his trademark erudition and enthusiasm for the subject."

"LITERATE AND SAVVY . . . BRIMS WITH WARTIME INTRIGUE." Never Have Your Dog Stuffed, filled with curiosity about nature, good humor, and honesty, is the crowning achievement of an actor, author, and director, but surprisingly, it is the story of a life more filled with turbulence and laughter than any Alda has ever played on the stage or screen. Anne (wife): My Husband's affair became the best thing that ever happened to me, yes eventually, Pushing the Limits: New Adventures in Engineering pdf but it was also the most devastating of my life. There was a time when I wondered if I could even live through it. With plenty of support available inside the book and online phonics practice at home has never been so fun or so easy! Dublin, 1845 and 46. On an international lecture tour in support of his subversive autobiography, Frederick Douglass finds the Irish people sympathetic to the abolitionist cause despite the fact that, as famine ravages the countryside, the poor suffer from hardships that are astonishing even to an American slave.

Anthony Capella: The Food of Love

The Food of Love

Description

Laura Patterson is an American exchange student in Rome who, fed up with being inexpertly groped by her young Italian beaus, decides there's only one sure-fire way to find a sensual man: date a chef. Then she meets Tomasso, who's handsome, young -- and cooks in the exclusive Templi restaurant. Perfect. Except, unbeknownst to Laura, Tomasso is in fact only a waiter at Templi -- it's his shy friend Bruno who is the chef. But Tomasso is the one who knows how to get the girls, and when Laura comes to dinner he persuades Bruno to help him with the charade. It works: the meal is a sensual feast, Laura is utterly seduced and Tomasso falls in lust. But it is Bruno, the real chef who has secretly prepared every dish Laura has eaten, who falls deeply and unrequitedly in love. A delicious tale of Cyrano de Bergerac-style culinary seduction, but with sensual recipes instead of love poems.

One Leg Too Few

Description

One Leg Too Few will feature an extensive range of fresh interviews, previously unpublished archive material and a wealth of information about the most creative (and explosive) double act that British comedy has ever produced. One Leg Too Few is a book about an extraordinary relationship: a friendship, a partnership - almost, at times, a marriage. Like a lot of marriages it ended badly, but for nearly 20 years, between the first date and the inevitable divorce, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore were the funniest thing on three continents. One Leg Too Few is the story of that relationship, and the comedy that came from it.

Martin Wallen: Fox

Fox

Description

Foxes live throughout the world in widely different habitats from forest to desert to the Arctic. What is surprising, though, is that scientists admit that very little is actually known about the lives and habits of foxes. The reason, which this book explores in depth, is that foxes are almost universally despised as being wicked. From the time of Aristotle, naturalists have succumbed to the general bias against foxes, either openly asserting that foxes are barely worthy of consideration or worrying about the health threat they pose. While this low regard is understandable, since foxes steal chickens and have a strong odour, they are strikingly beautiful animals possessed of a startling intelligence. Throughout Europe and Asia, folk tales and myths have built up around the fox, depicting it variously as unrepentant thief and seducer, shapeshifter and deceiver, as an outlaw whose primary purpose is to disrupt human social order. The fear and loathing people feel (paradoxically mixed with fascination) toward foxes are reflected in the many fox-terms that have entered different languages. In Japan, for example, various plants are identified with fox-names to indicate how they are supposedly used by foxes in an alternate universe. The contradictory attitudes toward foxes are exemplified in America and Europe by their classification as vermin at the same time as they are preserved and propagated by foxhunters and fur trappers, and depicted as loveable furry creatures in the movies.

Alex Higgins: From the Eye of the Hurricane: My Story

From the Eye of the Hurricane: My Story

Description

Considered by many to be a genius at his peak, Alex Higgins's unorthodox play and exciting style earned him the nickname 'Hurricane' and led to his immense popularity and fame. In 1972 he became the youngest winner of the World Championship, repeating his victory in emotional style in 1982. Higgins's story is so much more than just snooker. Head-butting tournament officials, threatening to shoot team-mates, getting involved with gangsters, abusing referees, affairs with glamorous women, frequent fines and lengthy bans, all contributed to Higgins slipping down the rankings as he succumbed to drink and lost his fortune. After suffering throat cancer, Alex Higgins now reflects on his turbulent life and career in his first full autobiography. The Hurricane is back - prepare to be caught up in the carnage.

The Last Days of Dogtown

Description

Set on the high ground at the heart of Cape Ann, the village of Dogtown is peopled by widows, orphans, spinsters, scoundrels, whores, free Africans, and "witches." Among the inhabitants of this hamlet are Black Ruth, who dresses as a man and works as a stonemason; Mrs. Stanley, an imperious madam whose grandson, Sammy, comes of age in her brothel; Oliver Younger, who survives a miserable childhood at the hands of his aunt; and Cornelius Finson, a freed slave. At the center of it all is Judy Rhines, a fiercely independent soul, deeply lonely, who nonetheless builds a life for herself against all imaginable odds. Rendered in stunning, haunting detail, with Diamant's keen ear for language and profound compassion for her characters, "The Last Days of Dogtown" is an extraordinary retelling of a long-forgotten chapter of early American life.

Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Young Adult Literature This last installment of the beloved series recounts the long-ago beginnings of Green Knowe, a time when Roger, the son of a Norman lord, was the first child to live in the grand old The Last Days of Dogtown free pdf manor. Roger finds some ancient stones on the grounds, which magically transport him back and forth in time so he can meet and befriend Toby, Linnet, Susan, and Tolly--the future inhabitants of Green Knowe and the heroes of the five other magical books in the series. Inspired by the beauty of the Book of Kells are five exquisitely designed gift products: a five-year journal illustrated throughout with details from the Book of Kells; a set of three large (A5) ruled notebooks; and a set of three small (A6) ruled notebooks; a boxed collection of 20 different notecards with high-quality envelopes; and a boxed collection of 30 different postcards. All five gifts celebrate the most important surviving work of Celtic art and Ireland's greatest national treasure.
